Tea tree oil (aka melaleuca) is an essential oil that has been used for treating various skin conditions for many years because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Having heard so much about how tea tree oil works wonders when it comes to fighting acne and since I have always (feels like it) been fighting acne, I thought I would give it a go. I mean who knows right? This might be it.
Note: This blog post is part one of my Tea Tree oil for treating acne series, so part two or more posts about this topic will follow.
I have the world’s most sensitive, acne prone combination skin, so I was a little bit ambivalent about trying out this little apparent bottle of liquid gold called tea tree oil. You see, I have tried everything – well almost everything if everything includes not going to the Accutane end (serious acne meds). I hear things can be pretty rough over there, so my “everything” stops right before the Accutane.
Now, where was I?
I have tried everything – topical and oral antibiotics, Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acid. Give me a list, and I’ll tick them off. A few of them have worked to some degree, but most of them have not.
Tea Tree Oil Routine
The Tea Tree Oil from tea tree oil and comes in a cute little green ‘essential oil looking’ bottle. To apply it, I first wash my face with the tea tree infused Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash. This facial wash got me at hello. It smells great and leaves my skin feeling rejuvenated. It also gets rid of my makeup and does a pretty good job.
After drying my face with a fresh, clean towel, I apply a few drops of Tea Tree oil to my face using a thin cotton pad; limiting the application to the areas where I normally get acne i.e. the forehead, jawline and temples. I then wait for 5 to 10mins before applying my usual day or night cream.
Progress so far?
So far so good and I have only used it for a week. My skin did get slightly drier after my first application, but I think it was because of the product switch up in my acne skin care routine. I have not had breakouts beyond the usual in fact I think my I’m noticing some major improvement; however, it is still too early to tell.
If there is one thing that I have learned over my many years of suffering from acne, it’s that each new acne product requires some time to kick in as long as it does not hurt your skin. So am in no hurry, and as long as my skin can take it (and the improvement continues), I plan on having tea tree oil as a permanent part of my daily acne skin care routine.
And guess how much I love the smell of Tea Tree oil! It smells so refreshing, so heavenly and feels heavenly on my skin too.
I will write a follow-up blog post to let you know how things go in a couple of weeks. I might have to write more than two follow-up blog posts – we’ll see. For now, thanks for stopping by, take care and enjoy the rest of your day!
