Although Christmas 2018 is still five months away, and I honestly can’t wait for the festivities to begin! And with the way time flies by so fast, it’s time to start looking at Christmas gifts for kids. This time we’ll be focusing on cool STEM toys for 9 to 13-year-old kids.
So, what is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEM toys for kids have a strong focus on these subjects to help foster a love of science, technology, engineering and math in kids. As an engineer myself, I love it when my daughters show an interest in STEM subjects. And I try to encourage them down this path through play with creative and exciting STEM toys.
My daughters have always loved playing with STEM toys (and all things Minecraft for the younger one) so finding some excellent gifts for them for Christmas this year has been such a breeze. I cannot wait for Christmas, so my kids (read ” kids and I”) can try out their new STEM toys.

There are so many STEM toys to choose from and picking one for 9-year-olds and up can be a bit of a daunting task. So, I’ve done some searching, so you don’t have to and rounded up 10 fab STEM toys for 9 to 13-year-old kids. From science sets to some pretty neat and exciting robot kits, there’s something for everyone.
First up, the Blue-Bot. Both my daughters love the Blue-Bot™; they think it’s cute and fun to play with. The Blue-Bot™ is a perfect STEM toy for kids as it teaches them the basics of coding, debugging and simulating algorithms. It promotes critical thinking in children and helps them develop their logical thinking skills too.
The Blue-Bot STEM toy for kids is Bluetooth enabled. Which means kids can write simple algorithms on their devices and send these algorithms to the Blue-Bot via Bluetooth. It’s also rechargeable, so you don’t have to worry about batteries. What’s more, this cute bot comes with a transparent shell so kids can see all the components inside which helps them understand how electronic devices look like on the inside.
My husband and I both have a background in Gemology and have a firm interest in precious and semi-precious gemstones. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that our daughters love gems too. I highly recommend this National Geographic Rock Tumbler. It’s a great kit to have when it comes to STEM toys for 9 to 13-year-old kids as it encourages curiosity around earth’s precious resources. Kids will also learn about what each stone is composed of.
The STEM Rock Tumbler kit comes with a tumbling machine, four polishing grits, nine different rough gemstones, and jewelry fastening. An educational guide and instructions are included too. And whats more, the tumbler also comes with a 2-year warranty which I think is excellent.
The Kano Motion Sensor Kit is designed to teach kids how to code using a visual language. Kids learn the basics of programming. They can create fun programs and control them using their hand, or foot, or nose. Most kids love gadgets these days so this will make a favorite gift for any occasion.
If your kids enjoy making stuff such as slime, cosmetics, and cupcakes as much as mine, then they might just like this lip balm kit. My daughters have already shown an interest in making their own cosmetics so this all natural Lip Balm Boutique might just find its way under our Christmas tree this year.
Kids can create their own custom line of lip balm with this Lip Balm Boutique Smart Lab. The smart lab includes 29 pieces for making lip balm using beeswax and kids can experiment with different ingredients to further customize their creations. This is a perfect kit for kids to learn a bit of chemistry. They can make lip balm for themselves or gift their friends.
How colorful are these Happy Atoms? Atoms can be pretty hard to visualize, but with the Happy Atom set, kids are able to build, scan and see what particular molecules look like. It’s a fun and easy way for kids to learn chemistry. The set comes with a free app for Android, Kindle and iOS devices.
Welcome to the world of Osmo. Osmo is a game system that brings play and hands-on learning together to provide the perfect environment for kids to learn STEM and STEAM subjects. With this system kids can play at math, drawing, do word challenges as well as visual challenges (interacts with kids in the real world). This game set requires an iPad.
This K’NEX Education STEM Explorations: Swing Ride Building Set will get any kid’s imagination, curiosity and creativity going. Kids can build replicas of real-world contraptions which is a great way to learn the basics of STEM subjects. It comes with a motor to make the structures that your child builds come to life. It also comes with a step-by-step experiment guide filled with educational and fun-filled experiments to keep your little one busy for hours (less screen time is always a bonus).
Gosh, how I wish I had this one when I was a kid! The Rule Your Room kit allows kids to invent touch-activated interactive security contraptions to protect their stuff from younger siblings. This is an excellent way for kids to develop engineering and problem-solving skills all while having so much fun. Your kid won’t even know this kit is a STEM toy.
I’ve always been fascinated by science, I mean just look at this Sick Science science kit, doesn’t it seem like fun? As a kid, science lab sessions used to be the highlight of my schools days. I just loved creating cool science experiences. This SICK kit is excellent for curious young minds. It comes with an activity guide and all the tools that your kid will need to create fun educational experiments. A QR code is also provided for kids to access experiment videos should they wish to explore further. The Sick Science science kit makes an excellent toy to add to the list of STEM toys for 9 to 13-year-old kids.
This Thames & Kosmos Electricity and Magnetism kit is a perfect and fun way for kids to learn about electricity and magnetism. Kids will have tons of fun building series and parallel circuits to light up light bulbs. They also learn about magnetic poles, how motors work and more! The kit allows kids to learn about the magnetic field and electric current, skills that could encourage them to study science in the future or at least get them thinking about science as a cool thing.
