Sleep is one thing that we all need to make sure that we get enough of. For some people, it seems that as soon as their head hits their pillow, they are sound asleep. However, for others, this may not always be the case. For someone who struggles to get off to sleep, there is a wealth of different approaches that they can take to try and make it easier. Some even turn to medication to cure their sleeping issues. Before you reach this last resort, it is worthwhile taking a wholly more natural approach to sleeping.
So, with this in mind, I have put together some of my top favorite tips on how to get to sleep easier, all the natural way.
1. Get Your Bedroom Temperature to Be Just Right
The temperature of our rooms can have a significant impact on how long it takes us to fall asleep. You should always aim to have a mild level of warmth in your bedroom.
If it is too hot or too cold, then you are much more likely to suffer from disrupted sleep or find it harder to drop off in the first place.
2. How to get to Sleep With Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender has been used for some time as a way to help you relax and drift off into a soothing sleep. There is something about the aroma of lavender, particularly if you dab the essential oil onto your wrists and temples that calms you down and gets you ready to rest.
If you work it into your bedtime routine, you can even use it as a signal to the rest of your body and mind, that it is time to hit the hay! I use lavender oil every night on my temples, wrists, and pillowcase and find it to be pretty relaxing.
3. Ditch The Phone and Pick up a Book
Gadgets are great, but not so much in the bedroom. The blue light that is emitted from the screens of tablets and smartphones is disruptive to our sleep/wake pattern and can tell your brain that it is actually time to get active, not slow down.
Rather than laying in bed scrolling through your phone, pick up a book instead, a known way to help you to drift off to sleep.
4. Try and Get Yourself into a Routine
We have already mentioned in passing a bedtime routine, but what we haven’t shared that having a bedtime routine in itself is a great way to prepare yourself for sleep. It isn’t just the things that you do. However, these can help such as a warm bath or a warm cup of hot chocolate.
But it is also the time that you do it. You should try to aim to go to bed and wake up the same time every day as this will ensure that your body understands when it is time to fall asleep and when it is time to wake up.
5. Listen to Some Calming Music
Some people find it much easier to fall asleep in silence; some need a certain level of “white” background noise to switch off (I’m one of those). If you find that the silence is too much to bear, then it may be worthwhile investing in a sleep-themed CD. This could be rain or sounds of nature or perhaps even some incredibly gentle music.
Stay away from anything that is going to make you want to get up and dance; else you may end up with a bedroom disco! 😉
